What is United
United Karate is a traditional multi-martial arts system. It was founded by Ben Kiker in 1973. It consist of Korean and Okinawan karate, kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu (art of grappling). Students of all ages will be taught this system and more. It is not cagefighting as in modern day mixed martial art (MMA). United Karate has a strong competitive dimension to it, however, competition is not the main focus. Overall, United Karate’s goal is to train each student to reach their full potential, both physically and mentally.
What Sets Us Apart
What sets us apart from “non-traditional” schools can be summed up in the way students are promoted. At Haymore’s United Karate the student is taught a technique and he or she practices it until it becomes second nature—reflex. This process takes time and patience for the student and instructor. The result of this process is the development of an internal strength that is at the heart of a traditional martial artist. Thus the focus is on the inner growth of the student, not achieving a belt.
“My ultimate goal is not to help students achieve a certain rank or belt. I want my students to be able to implement their skills in everyday life.”-Jim Haymore
With the recent rise in popularity of martial arts, many times the focus becomes on advancing to the next belt rank. This commercialization of martial arts distorts true martial arts where the focus for the student shifts from inner growth to “when do I get my next belt?” At Haymore’s United Karate students develop techniques and skills, which come from a deeper understanding of the movements. This process takes time and patience. However, the result develops a student who is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle real life situations.
